AUGUST 2018

On August 13, Crain’s Detroit Business profiled 26 women that are prominent in the technology field, and bringing more recognition to it. We are very proud that RAVE’s President, Sara Blackmer, was one of the honorees.

The people that work closely with this group of Notable Women in Technology, describe them as analytical, confident and collaborative. According to Crain, they secure networks, write code and identify new revenue opportunities, all the while inspiring young girls to consider STEM careers.  Click here to read more about this esteemed group.

For the first time, RAVE was an exhibitor at the SIGGRAPH show.  This year’s show was held August 14-16 in Vancouver, British Columbia. If you don’t know, SIGGRAPH is one of the premier exhibitions for the Computer Graphics industry and is attended by an average of 15,000 professionals from around the world. See our booth below.  read more

On August 13th AMD lifted the lid on its 2nd Generation Threadripper CPUs with four new models starting with the new flagship 32-core processor, the Threadripper 2990WX.  These new 12nm processors use the same CPU socket as the first gen Threadripper CPUs and are supported by the majority of existing X399 chipset motherboards as long as a BIOS update is applied prior to installation.

The new models are split into two categories: the X-series, which succeed the previous Threadripper CPUs and a brand-new WX workstation-class series for professional workstations and power users.

Rick's Reflections
Rick Darter, Co-founder and CEO

RAVE Computer is headquartered in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Since our founding in 1988 we have also had multiple satellite sales offices in years past – in both the US and Europe.

RAVE’s first satellite office was in Long Island, NY, followed by Nottinghamshire, UK. (The UK office remained locally owned, a “RAVE reseller”.) We have also had offices in Providence, Minneapolis, Austin, Seattle, Tampa, Washington DC and in the Netherlands (in a suburb of Amsterdam).

Quick funny story about the UK... At the time all RAVE employees received a jacket with the RAVE Computer logo on the back; we sent maybe six to the UK. London was the home of “Rave Parties.” The jackets there were so popular and in demand that we actually sold jackets into the UK – one hundred or more. At the time we had no idea what a Rave Party was.  read more

NVIDIA RTX was a huge feature at SIGGRAPH, we wanted to take time to talk about it more in depth.

The NVIDIA RTX Platform is the world's most advanced graphics platform. Powered by the NVIDIA Turing GPU architecture, the RTX Platform enables designers and artists to create amazing content and stunning visualizations faster than ever before. NVIDIA has enhanced its RTX development platform with new AI, ray tracing and simulation SDKs, to take full advantage of Turing’s capabilities. read more

The DGX Multi-System Reference Architecture comprises a single data center rack containing up to nine NVIDIA DGX-1 servers, storage, networking, and NVIDIA AI software to support workgroups of AI developers.

Many organizations are unsure how to size, install, and manage a DGX infrastructure for large-scale AI development efforts. The DGX Multi-System Reference Architecture provides a blueprint for easy sizing and deployment of DGX servers for large-scale deep learning.

RAVE Teambuilding

At RAVE we work as a team and think of each other as equal team members. And sometimes we like to do fun things as a team as well! So on August 23rd, the RAVE team visited the HUB Stadium - a local establishment that offers axe-throwing and bombowling.  This is a one-of-a-kind venue in the area and we had an absolute blast with our team. Teambuilding for Champions!  Check out their website for more about the fun.

Our HUB Stadium winners (l-r) Mark Witulski, Sarah Scott and Art Adlam.

NVMe - The Warfighter needs Intelligence FAST!

If your goal is to get important data to the Warfighter as fast as possible, you should seriously consider making the transition from SATA storage to NVMe storage. NVMe drives are removable. This is a benefit as it makes drives easily removable from the front. RAID Functionality can make drives hot-swappable or removable while the system is running. Locking removable can secure drives so they can’t be easily removable in secure or classified locations.

Additional benefits include being able to switch from one OS on one drive to another OS on another drive in the same system without having to disassemble the system. Some customers offload data onto a removable drives and then remove the drives and secure in a safe or offsite in classified type environments. Take a look at the differencein performance:

                            SATA III                 NVMe                       NVMe
Avg Seq Read      477 MB/s                 2352 MB/s              +393%
Avg Seq Write       438 MB/s                 1953 MB/s              +346%
Avg 4K Read          38  MB/s                  54 MB/s                   +43%
Avg 4K Write          97 MB/s                  157 MB/s                 +61%

The RAVE team, with family and friends, as we volunteered at the Gleaners Food Bank at the end of July. We are very proud that we were able to help a great local organization. RAVE loaded 11,832 pounds of food for the day, which translates to 9,466 people fed in the metro Detroit area.
