OCTOBER 2018

RAVE works closely with each of its clients to develop custom engineered solutions. As a recent example, RAVE worked with a client to create a rugged 1U server (a single 10 core Intel Xeon CPU) that can act both as a field replaceable system to a defective system currently on ship, as well as the next generation tech refresh system. RAVE’s design in effect created a 1U solution that replaced 4 less efficient servers.  Because of the scaling, the client will need less 1U console Servers than before.  read more

Attending SC18? Come by our booth and experience RAVE’s new RENDERBEAST! It is jam packed with four dual-width GPUs. We will also be featuring our 4U server powering multiple demos on our 2x2 array.  Find out how we can take your HPC performance to the next level - we are at booth 726.

This year’s theme is “HPC Inspires.” Join RAVE as a community of scientists, engineers, developers, system administrators, educators, students, program managers, CIOs, and policy makers once again gather for this annual event. Again this year, SC18 will continue the Conference’s emphasis on education and best practices that deliver leading-edge insights to HPC users.

Come see at booth 700!

We will be featuring hardware products that are designed for your Point of Need. From high performance compute, to rendering, to virtualization, to storage. RAVE will be featuring solutions that can improve training and real-life simulation with data analysis and virtualization services.

Be sure to come by to see our new RENDERBEAST, miniBEAST, and storage and server solutions -  as well as how we can customize your hardware solutions so you can turn data into actionable knowledge faster.

Rick's Reflections
Rick Darter, Co-founder and CEO

Given the recent news alleging cybersecurity concerns with certain computer hardware, we are dedicating this issue of Rick’s Reflections column to an update on this topic. We’ll return to Rick’s story of RAVE’s history in next month’s newsletter.

To Our Valued Customers:

The recent Bloomberg article regarding spyware chips being integrated into Supermicro motherboards during the manufacturing process in China is understandably alarming. Both Supermicro and the companies allegedly affected have strongly denied the allegations.

The potential for something like this to happen is not a new concept; it’s been talked about for years. This is the first time I am aware of that this potential has actually been alleged on a motherboard.  read more

Do we care?

Yes, we do. NVIDIA has changed the game again, but many people may not yet realize the significance of what just happened. NVIDIA’s RTX technology is just the tip of a disruptive iceberg that will forever change the way images and videos are rendered, the amount of detail possible to include, and the speed at which work can be completed.

Approaches that have been considered “Best Practices” in rendering computer graphics (CG) in real time have remained the industry standard for decades. Traditionally, to produce “acceptable” visual quality in real time, it was necessary to either A) minimize physics-based calculations by using various tricks designed to substitute accurate physics calculations with lower-overhead processes that can produce a “good-enough” result, or B) invest in sufficient compute capacity to accomplish the work by brute force. The former produces images that are not actually physically accurate, while the latter has a very high cost of entry and can cost millions of dollars.   read more
